Easy Guitar Lessons | Learn Stepping-Stone Chords

If you want to become amazing at guitar, you must learn stepping stone chords first.

Stepping-stone chords are easier versions of open chords.

But I want to learn the hard chords first, don’t give me the easy stuff!

Even though it sounds like you’re taking a step back, stepping stone chords accelerate your progress.

It’s important that when you learn how to play the guitar, you don’t try to run before you can walk.

Don’t think of learning stepping stone chords as a step back, think of it as a way of moving forward.

By learning easier chords first, you’ll be well on your way to mastering more advanced chords.

With that in mind, let’s learn some.

How do I play stepping stone chords?

The five main stepping stone chords are:

• G6.
• Em.
• Asus2.
• Cmaj7.
• Dsus2.

G6

To play this chord:

• Place your 2nd finger on the 3rd fret of the low E string. (6th string.)
• Place your 1st finger on the 2nd fret of the A string. (5th string.)
• Strum all the strings.

Em

To play this chord:

• Place your 1st finger on the 2nd fret of the A string. (5th string.)
• Place your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the D string. (4th string.)
• Strum all the strings.

G6-Em

A great way to practice your guitar chords, is to practice changing between them.

As an exercise try changing between G6 and Em.

To do this chord change, all you have to do here is move your 2nd finger from the 3rd fret on the low E string (6th string), to the 2nd fret of the D string. (4th string.)

Here are a few tips and tricks which will help you nail those chord changes:

• Go slow, move between each chord at your own pace.
• Make sure each note is clear.
• Strum all strings correctly.

If you want, you could try and leave four beats between each change. That would sound like this:

Now we’ve learned G6 and Em, let’s learn Asu2.

Asus2

To play this chord:

• Place your 1st finger on the 2nd fret of the D string. (4th string.)
• Place your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the G string. (3rd string.)
• Strum from the A string. (5th string.)

It should sound like this:

Em-Asus2

You may have noticed, this chord uses the exact same fingering as the Em chord, except it’s moved down a string.

As a challenge, try and change between Em and Asus2. As they use the same chord shape, this change is great for enhancing your dexterity and technique.

C Major 7

To play this chord:

• Place your 2nd finger on the 3rd fret of the A string. (5th string.)
• Place your 1st fret on the 2nd fret of the D string. (4th string.)
• Strum from the A string. (5th string.)

G6-C Major 7

A great way to practice the C major 7 chord would be to change from a G6 to a C major 7.

Both of these chords use EXACTLY the same shape, however they both start on different strings. This means they’re relatively easy to change between.

As an exercise, try moving between G6 to C major 7.

Dsus2

The final chord we’re going to learn is a Dsus2, this chord is a little bit trickier than the previous chords.

Here it is:

To learn this chord:

• Place your 1st finger on the 2nd fret of the G string. (3rd string.)
• Place your 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the B string. (2nd string.)
• Strum from the D string. (4th string.)

This chord is a little trickier as you have to strum from the D string. Take your time with this essential chord!
