What is an F# Chord?

The F# chord is a:

• Major chord in the key of F#.

There are 12 keys in music, but for today’s lesson we’re going to focus on the F# major chord.

In the guitar world, there are many ways that a major chord can be written.

Here are a few examples:

As long as the chord doesn’t have the word ‘minor’ or a lowercase ‘m’ written after it. It is ALWAYS major.

How do I play the F# Chord?

There are many ways to play the F# chord. However the two most common ways are:

• The F# Chord (A Barre Shape).

We refer to this as the ‘E shape’ because it is based on an open E chord.

• Barre your first finger across all the strings on the 2nd fret.
• Place your 3rd finger on the 4th fret of the A string. (5th string.)
• Place your 4th finger on the 4th fret of the D string. (4th string.)
• Place your 2nd finger on the 3rd fret of the G string. (3rd string.)

F# Barre Chord (A Shape)

This F# barre chord is known as the ‘A shape’ because the heart is based on an open A chord.

• Barre your 1st finger on the 9th fret from the A string (5th string) to the high E string. (1st string.)
• Place your 2nd finger on the 11th fret of the D string. (4th string.)
• Place your 3rd finger on the 11th fret of the G string. (3rd string.)
• Place your 4th finger on the 11th fret of the B string. (2nd string.)

1) F# Chord (3 Finger Version)

This chord is perfect for beginners because:

• It only uses 3 fingers.
• It’s sounds pretty, lovely if you want to add texture in a band.
• It’s a moveable shape.

• Place your 3rd finger on the 11th fret of the G string. (3rd string.)
• Place your 4th finger on the 11th fret of the B string. (2nd string.)
• Place your 1st finger on the 9th fret of the high E string. (1st string.)
• Strum from the G string. (3rd string.)
